The Call of Duty Myth

There is not a solider inside us all. Period! There are a very select group of brave men and woman who can claim they have what it takes to be a solider, and I thank each and every one of them from the bottom of my heart.  To make a claim that there is a solider inside us all is not only insulting to those men and women who risk their life to protect our freedom everyday, it is flat out wrong.  So who made this claim that there is a solider inside us all?  The new Call of Duty video game commercial.  Which, if I may add, has a scene with a young girl firing a shot gun and smiling about it after.  This commercial sickens me.  Don't get me wrong, I think the video game is fun to play.  I should also note that I am not one of those people who believes violent video games produce violent children (if parents took responsibly, it would be a non-issue, but we will save that for another time). I don't know how they got off making a commercial that mocks a war zone, with everyday people and show them smiling about it!

How about this, let us send a bunch of "regular" people into an actual combat situation.  Force them to kill someone and then watch their friend die next to them.  Let us see if they are smiling then.  Activision, you should be ashamed of yourself.

  1. The point isn't that everyone would be able to handle the pressures of battle, or smile as their friend is blown away next to them,it's that everyone (most everyone) has that "desire" to be the hero. Obviously this is nothing more than a dream for most people because as you said most of us lack the bravery and courage to actually do so. The fact that the people are smiling in the commercial to me is a good thing! It is supposed to be like playing the game is as realistic as a "GAME" can be. So if they know that Call of Duty is a game and no one is really being killed in the commercial than of course they are having fun! Do you smile when you play paintball? You are simulating war! Why should you have fun? Also, it was treyarch that made this call of duty!

  2. in some point I guess not all of us will take it in a literal way. so I do agree with anonymous when He said that the game is just a contrast of reality.
The problem is that not all of us interpret it that way. Most kids dont understand it and they tend to merge reality and fantasy..
going beyond the game and the real war zone.. I guess it is true that there is a soldier with in us all. Its not only in war they we show the courage and bravery that we have. we also show it in personal ways.. unnoticed most of the time.
but then again that all depends on how we look at it..
cheers... nice blog by the way.
